4.3 Swap Info & Notes
Motor:
The Chevy 4.3 can
be found in GM vehicles from 1985-2004. Desierable combinations would come from a 1992-2002 GM s-seriese or full size truck, these all have the TBI
injection. 2002-newer have MPI but will
likely be too hard to find.
Transmission:
The last year of the 700R4 was 1992. According to the site below, GM renamed the
700R4 4L60. Either of these tranny's should work just fine but
the 4L60 has an electronically controlled brother that may not be ideal for the
intended use. The key distinction of
the Later 4L60-E (1997-2006) from the Early 4L60-E (1992-1997) or 4L60
(1990-1992) or 700R4 (1982-1989) is the six-bolt "hex" rear
output or tailhousing / adapter pattern. The previous
versions featured a four-bolt square bolt pattern at the adapter or tailhousing. Additionally, the removeable
bellhousing is also another distinguishing feature.
Because the transmission
is electronically controlled by the PCM and its requisite wiring, it is usually
simplest to join the 4L60-E to the engine it came with from the factory.
Earlier engines can be joined to the 4L60-E by use of a GM Controller,
#12497316. Individuals converting to
earlier engines or engines not controlled by a GM PCM should consider the TH700R-4
<th700r4.htm>as the simpler and cost-conscious
alternative.
T-case:
Need an NP231C (chevrolet). Has a different BP from the NP231J
(jeep). 700R4 will bolt directly to an
NP231C. Because the case is the same,
the doubler kit will still work for either. Also, the t-case input/tranny output are
different spline counts between the two with the
NP231C being 27spl, will need to verify that the plenetary
has the same spline count in the NP231C as the NP231J
to be sure the adapter will work for either.
Avail from 88-97 in S10's, from 88-97 in Blazer's.
